Readout of Secretary Hagel's Meeting with President of Peru Ollanta Humala

Secretary Hagel hosted Peruvian President Ollanta Humala this afternoon at the Pentagon following President Humala's meeting with President Obama earlier today at the White House.  Peruvian Defense Minister Pedro Cateriano and Foreign Minister Eda Rivas also joined the meeting at the Pentagon.

Secretary Hagel affirmed the importance of the U.S.-Peru bilateral relationship and told President Humala that the Department of Defense is committed to increasing our cooperation, including in the areas of training and information sharing.  Secretary Hagel also commended President Humala on Peru's comprehensive counter-narcotics strategy and recent operations to interdict narco-terrorists.

Both leaders agreed that one of the key vehicles to deepening defense cooperation is an updated defense cooperation agreement that the United States and Peru began working on following then-Secretary Panetta's visit to Lima last year.  They agreed that representatives from both nations should work to finalize these consultations.

Secretary Hagel thanked President Humala for hosting the next Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas and conveyed that he looks forward to working with Minister Cateriano on a successful meeting.
