Don't miss this rare opportunity! | QUESTION If a hacker steals one of my passwords, could they use that to figure out my other passwords? I know you say to never use the same password on multiple sites for this reason, but if they're a little similar, couldn't a hacker still figure things out? -Meg from Bloomington, IN, listens to my national radio show on WGCL 1370 AM and 95.9 FM. ANSWER This is an excellent question, Meg. It's especially critical when you think about the high-profile hacks in the last few years. In every one of those, hackers snagged thousands or millions of usernames, email addresses and passwords. That's why, as you mentioned, I tell you not to use the same password for every account. That just makes a hacker's job way too easy. But even if you use different passwords, is that still a guarantee of safety? Maybe hackers can figure out your password pattern. You wouldn't know until it was too late! When it comes to security, there are a lot of moving parts you have to consider. Fortunately, there are ways you can reduce the risk.
