Wednesday 12, June 2013 Winter woes and Sydney shows The “winter blues” (or 'seasonal affective disorder') is a type of depression that typically starts in autumn, continuing into the winter months, sapping you of chutzpah and rendering you humourless in the extreme. We all may suffer this affliction from time to time. Remedies can include weird hippy thermal therapies, air tickets to warmer climes and evenings out with friends to dine & wine til our cheeks do shine, we do a conga line and we look divine and drink gin & lime and have a funky good-time. Before the Kelvin Club existed, there was a lovely bowling club on what is now Victoria Parade.   This lovely club had one unusual asset: an unrestricted liquor licence.  When progress decreed that the club be raised to make way for an electric tram track, some conspiratorial club members were determined to keep the dream alive.  Led by Metropolitan Fire Brigade CEO John Wilkins, these visionaries stacked the bowling club committee and ensured that, after the turf was distributed to other clubs, 24 members plus the liquor licence (and the billiard table) transferred to a building in the CBD. There it was: a bowling club without any actual bowling - an anomaly corrected on 31st October 1927, when it became the Kelvin Club in honour of Lord Kelvin, the Scottish physicist. Drink anyone?
