For the Love of Food Posted: 07 Jun 2013 11:44 AM PDT For The Love of Food Welcome to Friday's For The Love of Food, Summer Tomato's weekly link roundup. This week a crash course in deceptive meat labels, fish eaters outlive vegetarians, and Splenda impacts insulin responses. Want to see all my favorite links? (There's lots more). Be sure to follow me on on Delicious. I also share links on Twitter @summertomato, Google+ and the Summer Tomato Facebook page. I'm very active on all these sites and would love to connect with you. (And yes, I took that pepper heart pic myself). Links of the week - FAT CITY: What can stop obesity? <<A fascinating and sensitive look at the obesity epidemic from the eyes of a doctor in a bariatric clinic. She’s looking for a better answer than scalpels and pills, and thinks we need cultural and mental changes to take root. I whole-heartedly agree. Definitely worth a read. (The Monthly)
- What You Should Know About Poultry Production Claims <<Solid gold. A glimpse into the deceptive labels on poultry––a must read if you care about how your meat is raised. (Mark’s Daily Apple)
- Vegetarian Diets Associated With Lower Risk of Death <<BS of the week. Sorry guys, but if you actually look at the data from this study (which has plenty of confounders), fish eaters still lived longer than vegetarians and vegans. Last I checked if you eat fish you aren’t vegetarian. My general take is that anyone who pays enough attention to their diet to eliminate specific categories of food is eating healthier than a typical American (the “meat eaters”), which isn’t very hard to do. #headlinefail (ScienceDaily)
- Google adds nutrition info for foods to search results <<Cool to see people caring more about nutrition, but before you get too excited about tracking every molecule you eat keep in mind that the info you are getting is derived from averages of industrially produced foods. Seasons, weather, soil quality and food varietal can create huge variations in nutritional quality. All carrots are not created equal. (Treehugger)
- Artificial Sweeteners May Do More Than Sweeten: It Can Affect How the Body Reacts to Glucose <<Interesting but small study shows that sucralose (Splenda) may not be as inert as many of us assume. (ScienceDaily)
- Japan and other nations say no to U.S. wheat, worried about GMOs <<Serves Monsanto right, in my opinion. (Grist)
- Even Shorter Bouts of High-Intensity Exercise Improve Physical Fitness in Inactive Men <<More evidence that time-strapped people can benefit greatly from short amounts of high-intensity exercise. (ScienceDaily)
- Stop Peeling Those Fava Beans <<I learned something new about fava beans from the Wall Street Journal. Awesome.
- Pesticides again tied to Parkinson’s disease <<Yep. 58% increase in risk and sometimes higher, depending on the pesticide. (Medline)
- Kale Chips <<If you’ve never tried kale chips, they are one of the easiest and tastiest veggie dishes you could add to your repertoire. A perfect Home Court Recipe. (David Lebovitz)
