The United States Fire Administration’s National Fire Academy has added two Hazardous Materials Code Enforcement offerings for the first semester Fiscal Year 2014. The courses are scheduled for January 5 – 10 and March 23 – 28, 2014 at the National Emergency Training Center (NETC) in Emmitsburg, Maryland.
The application period is open NOW through June 15, 2013 for these deliveries. This is a cross curriculum development that resides in both the Fire Prevention Technical Curriculum and the Hazardous Materials Curriculum.
Course Description The Hazardous Materials Code Enforcement course is designed to guide students in gaining and sharing the knowledge, skills and abilities to effectively recognize and analyze hazardous materials risk, classify materials and apply codes, standards, and regulations through a collaborative approach to prevent incidents and mitigate or reduce the risk to life and property. This course is not a response course.
Upon completion of the course, students learn how to analyze the level of Fire and Life Safety inside and outside of occupied and unoccupied structures or facilities that handle, use, store, transport, and dispose of hazardous materials. Learning is accomplished through interactive lecture, group activities, discussion, and evaluation. The students will demonstrate:
Identification and classification of hazardous materials Quantifying and evaluating materials Apply codes and control methods Communicating, planning, and demonstration of risk reduction techniques
Student Selection Criteria: Hazardous Materials Inspectors, Fire Safety Personnel, Plans Reviewers, Building Officials, Planner, and Safety Personal responsible for ensuring fire and life safety.

Prerequisites: None (other than NIMS Introduction, ICS 100 and ICS 200 as required of all NFA students)
