Eager Lion Illustrates American-Jordanian Partnership

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, June 7, 2013 - In a statement issued today, the Department of Defense said it looks forward to participating in Eager Lion, an annual multilateral training exercise in the Kingdom of Jordan that will take place from June 9 to June 20, 2013.

The rest of the DOD statement reads as follows:

Eager Lion is just one example of the close partnership between the U.S. and Jordan. This year, over 8,000 U.S. personnel will join 19 different nations to focus on a number of irregular warfare scenarios to enhance interoperability among allies and partners.

As part of this exercise, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has approved the use of F-16s and Patriot Missile batteries in Jordan. A detachment of F-16s will arrive in Jordan from a forward deployed location. One Patriot Missile battery will be delivered via airlift from Fort Hood, Texas.

At this time, the plan is for the F-16s and Patriot Missile battery to remain in Jordan through the completion of Exercise Eager Lion. We continue to consult closely with the Government of Jordan on their security needs in light of the Syrian crisis.

If requested by the Government of Jordan, we will consider extending the deployment of the F-16s and Patriot Battery associated with Eager Lion beyond the exercise, to further develop our strong bilateral defense relationship.
