From David Beaulieu, your Guide to Landscaping
Welcome to installment #548 of Landscaping Newsletter. Do you love the outdoors? Between woods, beach and garden, I've tried to spend as much time outside as possible during my lifetime. Do you know the song from the TV show, Green Acres (a rerun favorite), which features dueling perspectives (pro and con) on country life? Put me down as being on the "pro" side....

How to Identify Poison Ivy
But danger lurks within some of those nooks of nature that we treasure so much. The best defense is to arm oneself with knowledge. In a recent newsletter I supplied tips on controlling that disease-carrying menace, the mosquito, and shortly I will be discussing a topic relevant to Lyme-disease prevention: deer-resistant plants (since the ticks bearing the disease come to your yard on deer). But the topic this week is a plant menace: poison ivy. Learn how to identify it -- for sure!

Red, White and Blue Flowers
July 4th isn't far off. That's Independence Day in the U.S., for which occasion folks frequently landscape with red, white and blue flowers. Are you considering doing so this year? Here are some ideas for flower choices and related matters.

Royal Candles: a Good Speedwell

I've been battling a tenacious little weed named "corn speedwell" (Veronica arvensis). It's an annual, meaning that it's critical to stop it from going to seed to as great a degree as possible (fewer seeds equals less to fight the following year). So I've been pulling it wherever I find it -- and I'm finding it all over!

But there are good types of speedwell (Veronica), too. I grow the perennial, 'Royal Candles'. From a runt of a weed to royalty: that's Veronica. Who would have thought it?

Free Sign-Up for Landscaping Courses

I offer 5 ecourses. Course #1 runs for 108 days, while Course #4 lasts 128 days. The others run for about a month. Many readers have taken all of them, since each course covers different material. It makes no difference which one you sign up for first, as all of the courses stand on their own, independently of each other.
