Plants & Lawns

From David Beaulieu, your Guide to Landscaping
Welcome to installment #546 of Landscaping Newsletter. Now that June is here, heat becomes a factor in people's landscaping across most of the Northern Hemisphere. Specifically, our plants -- especially plants we've installed only recently and that, therefore, haven't had time to become established -- are often very much in danger of succumbing to drought....

Drought-Tolerant Ground Covers

Your initial reaction may be, "I don't have to worry: I water regularly." That's fine, as far as it goes. But what happens when you go away on vacation?

That's one reason why you'll hear so much talk in gardening circles about "drought-tolerant plants." I've prepared resources for you on drought-tolerant choices across the horticultural spectrum (from the shortest perennials to the tallest trees) and will be releasing them in installments. We begin this week with drought-tolerant ground covers.

Landscaping With Dogs: Ready to Compromise?

Sometimes, our passions conflict with one another. E.g., let's say you have a passion for large dogs. Your dog may spend a lot of time romping around outside. Now let's say another of your passions is landscaping, and that your ideal is to have a nice lawn, beautiful flower beds, etc.

You may have to face a harsh reality at some point: something has to give, either on the canine side of the ledger or the landscaping side. This article on landscaping with dogs helps you arrive at a compromise.

Rabbit-Proof Flowers

Some gardeners compromise with the wild rabbits, too. They'll grow extra plants, figuring that, should they incur a rabbit invasion, there will still be plenty of plants left unharmed.

That's one way to handle it. But others will prefer a different approach: namely, growing plants that rabbits are less likely to destroy. Here's a quick look at some rabbit-proof plants.

Free Sign-Up for Landscaping Courses

I offer 5 ecourses. Course #1 runs for 108 days, while Course #4 lasts 128 days. The others run for about a month. Many readers have taken all of them, since each course covers different material. It makes no difference which one you sign up for first, as all of the courses stand on their own, independently of each other.
