Let's talk about asteroids This Friday, an asteroid nearly two miles wide will pass by the Earth. There's no cause for alarm -- even when it's at its closest, the asteroid will still be 3.6 million miles from our planet. That's about 15 times farther from us than the Earth is from the Moon. But we still think it's a good topic for conversation. So we're hosting a "We the Geeks" Google+ Hangout to talk about asteroids with Bill Nye the Science Guy, former astronaut Ed Lu, NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver, and others. And we'd love for you to join the discussion. RSVP today, and we'll send you a reminder before the hangout. President Obama’s new budget calls on NASA to increase efforts to detect and mitigate potentially hazardous asteroids, and NASA right now is studying a robotic mission to capture and bring a small asteroid into a stable orbit just beyond the Moon. We’ll be talking about all that and more, and we'd love to have you be part of that conversation. RSVP today, then use the hashtag #WeTheGeeks on Twitter and on Google+, and we'll answer some of your conversations during the live Hangout.
