Plants & Lawns

From David Beaulieu, your Guide to Landscaping
Welcome to installment #545 of Landscaping Newsletter. Dogwoods (Cornus) are a pretty remarkable group of plants. Your first thought on hearing them mentioned may be "trees," but they're not limited to that plant group. As you probably know, there are dogwoods in the shrub category, too, including two of my wintertime favorites: red and yellow twig dogwood....

Golden Shadows Pagoda Dogwood

What you may not know is there's a little wildflower in Canada and the northern U.S. known as "bunchberry" that is a type of dogwood (Cornus canadensis). It reaches all of 6 inches high!

Cornus' benefits are diverse too. Depending on the type, you may have any combo of the following:

  • Spring flowers
  • Variegated leaves
  • Berries
  • Colorful fall foliage
  • Nice branching pattern
  • Colorful bark

Which of these qualities does this week's featured plant possess? Read my article on Golden Shadows to find out.

10 Must-Have Shrubs

Imagine how much poorer the landscape would be without shrubs. If our yards contained only typical trees (read: "relatively tall plants") and typical perennials (read: "relatively short plants"), many a yard would be comparatively boring. Fortunately, we have those "tweeners," the shrubs, to bridge the height gap.

But not all shrubs are created equal. I single out Ten Must-Have Shrubs in this article to help you decide between the myriad of available choices.

Design Help Through Pictures

Do you know what plants you like best? Of course you do! Even non-gardeners express strong opinions about this or that plant. You don't have to be interested in landscaping to experience gut reactions toward particular plants. We seem to be wired with that capability.

But design skills are a totally different issue. Many homeowners don't know how to arrange plants for optimal impact. Could you use a little help, yourself in that arena? The landscape design pictures here should help.

I offer 5 ecourses. Course #1 runs for 108 days, while Course #4 lasts 128 days. The others run for about a month. Many readers have taken all of them, since each course covers different material. It makes no difference which one you sign up for first, as all of the courses stand on their own, independently of each other.
