From Marie Iannotti, your Guide to Gardening

The weather is still being temperamental and I'm flipping between caution and panic. The weather is one of the reasons I like to hedge my bets and plant many vegetables in succession. Another reason is that I'm greedy.

So to get more out of my vegetable garden, in addition to succession planting, I start new plants under slow growing larger plants, like seeding some lettuce under the tomato seedlings or beets under cabbage. I don't make a plan. It's more of fill in the blank. I never let an empty space go unplanted.

Gardening Tip of the Week

Squirrel Deterrent for Bulbs: When planting bulbs, drop a garlic clove in the hole next to bulb. Plant as usual. Squirrels won't "steal" bulbs...They hate garlic! --Submitted by tdiraimo

When Broccoli Doesn't Chill
We think of broccoli as a cool weather vegetable, but young seedlings don't actually like cold weather. Temperatures below 50 F. cause them to develop buttons and they may never produce full heads.

Sophistocated Silvers
Silver and gray leaved plants have a definite elegance about them. They can be a little tricky to use in the garden. They are most often paired with pastels, but they add a lovely chilling effect to hotter colors and they're fun to play around with.

A Colorful Season
Every garden has one season where it looks its absolute best. Gardens can't be at perpetual peak, but with a little planning, there can be a continuation of color and interest.
