My Bit for Change

We are humans, thank God, for we have the ability to suppress animal instincts. It is this nature to control raw flares of often unwanted behaviour that makes us human. Of the animal instincts most abhorred in our being, it is not the unnecessary and unheeded violent behaviour that I want to highlight; it has already been made the subject of many a films, articles and pieces of literature. It is instead the goldfish instinct in all of us, which we so ironically forget about, that we should visit today.

That sun-drenched afternoon, 2 days before the election, history repeated itself in Multan; like the Taseers', a Gilani son got abducted. The public sentiments varied from the crude poetic justice to sagacious sympathy. Emotions ran high in the family and party supporters alike and desperate outbursts from the Gilani brothers graced the TV screens and disgraced law enforcement agencies yet again. To date, the young Gilani remains missing with a few credible leads leading to some arrests. This is marginally better progress than the Taseers' case and infinitely better progress than most of us could have dreamt of seeing if we were put in a similar nightmare.

On the day, the clamour of this unfortunate event could have taken the whole city and eventually the whole election process into a downward spiral. The right focus from the media, the right nerve, the right note from PPP at that precise time and a whole lot of wrong would have entailed. Who is to know our Tehrir Square might have started from the sweet, loving people who converse in melodious Seraiki?

However, Gilani Saab's prudent handling of the matter remains, to date, is his most desirable memory in the minds of most. We have all forgotten and forgiven what had come to pass for 4 years. For a father to lose a son in such manner is most painful. Spare a thought, as well, for the missing persons' families going through similar ordeals without any closure for years. Our prayers go out to the whole Gilani family for now; to console them and to give them hope that no more wrong will happen to them. We appeal for the safe release of Ali Haider Gilani.

So, for the time being, let's bow in to the goldfish instinct of short term memory and let our criticism of mediocrity be shrouded by the emotion of pity. We forgive you Gilani Saab but, in our next hour of need, please don't ask us to leave Pakistan; remnants of that sinister smirk laden image of you still remain. I am quite sure you had better words of consolation for your bereaved sons on 09th May 2013. Yes, blood is thicker than water but you were, after all, a foster parent to an orphaned nation.

These dogs are often termed as family dogs, because of their friendly nature and the ability to play with children. These dogs generally suffer from the ailment of eye disorders; such a problem is witnessed in this breed quite often.

2. German Shepherds

These dogs are generally used by Police for the interrogation purposes. They have the origins from Germany. The first breed of these dogs was discovered in late 1800's. The urge to learn have made these dogs the most wanted breed available. They can serve a particular purpose upon training. Their ability to adapt makes them the most versatile dog breed present. The over-protective nature of the breed makes them a bit aggressive sometimes.

3. Beagles

This breed of dogs is commonly used by the security people because of the ability of this breed to sniff well. The origin of this breed is Great Britain. They have been used in many references in article dating back to ancient Greece period. These dogs are very friendly and gentle. The attachment they show to their owners makes them one of the most loyal dogs.

4. Kuvasz

This breed hails from the Hungarian lands. The initial use of this breed was to safeguard the livestock of farmers. It is just recently that these dogs have emerged to be house pets. They are highly intelligent and understand the signals of their owner well. They like having attention around them. The built of these dogs makes them good guards of their owner.

5. Labrador Retrievers

They hail from the east coast of North America. This breed is known for its happy nature and great energy levels. The friendly nature of this breed with the owners make it the most suitable and loyal breed of dogs available in the market.

6. Brittany

This breed is the produce of Brittany region of France. These dogs were originally assigned the mission of bird hunting. They are easy to handle and they train easily with the trainers. They have a good nature. They like being pampered by people and are the most loved breed in France.

7. Boxers

This breed hails from Germany and they are known for their kill mode. They are dangerous dogs with incredibly strong jaws. They are used to hold the board or deer until the hunters make an appearance. They are ruthless to the opponent. However, they can be very sweet-natured towards the family. They are lovely to the owner and like to go for outdoors in order to keep fit and to do leisure activities.

8. Dachshunds

They also have roots in Germany. Because of the long length of body, these dogs are often referred as the hot dogs. They are commonly used to hunt rabbits and other prey on the basis of their strong jaws and energy-bound legs. These dogs like to play with the family members. The love for outdoors is seen in this breed too. The attachment they show towards the owner is incomparable.

9. Golden Retrievers

Hailing from the greens of Scotland, this breed of dogs is used for the retrieving game. They are quite happy to play with people and do not like to be alone. The patience practiced by them is often admirable. They are often considered as a family dog and never falsify this statement.

10. Yorkshire Terriers

They are often termed as Yorkie. They are the tiniest of the terrier breeds available in the market. Their forefathers come a long way from 1800's. They are often used in dog shows and their ability to train well makes them the most attractive breed among the others in the dog shows. They are admirable and most of the owners just love them.

Click To View Full Story For the first time since World War II, a member of the Wisconsin Army National Guard has earned the Silver Star Medal. The soldier was awarded the medal during a ceremony at Volk Field in Camp Douglas, Wis., May 31.

1st Sgt. Gregory A. Fulton, a combat engineer from Arbor Vitae, Wis., earned the award - the nation's third highest military decoration for valor, for his gallantry in action during an engagement Aug. 10, 2009 in Pul-E-Alam, Afghanistan. Lt. Gen. Joseph L. Lengyel, the vice chief of the National Guard Bureau, presented the Wisconsin National Guardsman with the award.

"I think on a personal level, like I said, I'm honored," Fulton said. "I think what I feel most about the award ... I'm far more proud of my unit and the courage and the bravery that they displayed on a daily basis."

Preferring to focus on the service and sacrifices of his unit instead, Fulton said the medal was a reflection of a team effort.

"He is a very humble man," his wife Sandra said. "I know that this isn't his thing today. I know he'd rather focus on the unit. He just doesn't like a lot of attention on himself."

Fulton's unit, the 951st "Sapper" Engineer Company, based in Tomahawk, Wis., was called to provide a dismounted security force to assist the Afghan National Army in clearing a building that held insurgents delivering small arms fire. According to the award citation, Fulton never hesitated as he took charge of an ad-hoc 12-man U.S.-Afghan assault team.

The Silver Star recipient led the team into the building, where it cleared each floor while encountering an increasing barrage of gunfire and casualties as they closed in on the enemy combatants. In a dangerous spot, Fulton and his team engineered an improvised breaching device that allowed them to neutralize the remaining insurgents and clear the building.

"Our options were to storm the stairs where the likelihood of success would be limited at best," he said. "I don't think it would have been worth storming the stairs at that point. So we were going to come up with an alternate means of getting up there."

His ingenuity in the face of the enemy likely saved several Soldiers' lives and ultimately secured Fulton's place in the pantheon of Silver Star winners that came before him.

Though Fulton deflected praise for his actions, others who served with him paid tribute to his character.

"The easiest way to sum it up is humility, commitment, courage, and valor under fire under some extreme circumstances," said Maj. Brian Barth, who was Fulton's company commander in Afghanistan. "Where most individuals would probably turn and run, he didn't. He coalesced individuals involved in that, seized the initiative, and did some intuitive thinking on how to mitigate the threat."

Sgt. 1st Class Richard Helm said he was not surprised that Fulton reacted so valiantly under fire.

"He's a quiet, confident leader," Helm said. "He speaks when he has something important to say, generally. But he's well-liked by the troops, and it's important for him to make sure that the troops are taken care of. Not only that they're taken care of, but that they are getting good training. He's an excellent leader and a good all-around person."

Others were also not surprised at Fulton's valor.

"It was obviously a surprising story, but looking back on him being there and the ideas and things he came up with, it doesn't surprise me one bit," said 1st Lt. Dylan Abler, who also served with the Silver Star winner in Afghanistan. "That was just kind of what it was. Fulton was someone you could often look to to solve problems on the ground. That was obviously a problem to be solved, and he took care of it."

"The Silver Star is not a popularity contest - it reflects valorous, heroic actions on the battlefield," said Maj. Gen. Donald P. Dunbar, the state's adjutant general. "I'm sure 1st Sgt. Fulton didn't wake up on Aug. 10, 2009, and decide to do something heroic that day. His actions were instinctive and bear out his character and dedication. And his actions were successful, which speaks to his ability. In that firefight, 1st Sgt. Fulton was the embodiment of what we expect from an American Soldier. Here at home, he remains the epitome of a Citizen Soldier. Always ready. Always there."

Born on Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss., in 1973, Fulton grew up in northern California where he graduated from Sutter High School before joining the Army in 1991. After graduating from basic training and infantry school, he went on to graduate from the Army's airborne, air assault, pathfinder, and ranger schools.

While on active duty, he deployed to Haiti and Saudi Arabia. In 1998, he transferred to the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 724th Engineer Battalion, based in Rhinelander, Wis. He eventually deployed to Iraqi as a platoon sergeant and later to Afghanistan as the first sergeant of the 951st.

Only one other Soldier in the Wisconsin Army National Guard holds a Silver Star, but that Soldier earned the medal while serving as a member of the active component Army.

He and his wife live in Arbor Vitae, Wis., with their three children.
